The Njavarakizhi Ayurvedic treatment has the first stage that involves an application of oil all over the body to firstly loosen the skin and muscles for treatment. It has to be agreed to that this oil is chosen depending on the constitution, the pathology and the condition of the client’s body. Following this, the kizhi, or bolus, is made from cooking Njavara rice in a herbal water preparation accompanied by medicinal milk and the bolus’ texture becomes warm and pudding like. These are covered and packed into small muslin cloth bags to make boluses that can be used to cause therapeutic sweating.
In the process of the treatment, a professional therapist immerses the bolus in hot teas and then gently strokes it along the client’s body with certain emphasis on problem zones. To maintain the kizhi at the required temperature, it is re-immersed in the warm decoction whenever necessary so that it could be effectively used in different positions. Upon the application of the rice paste in bolus form, the rice paste left on the body is then gently washed or peeled off with such plants as those of coconut tree. Last of all, a warm, medicated oil is again gently rubbed on the skin to increase the body’s ability to accept the full miracles of this treatment.
The treatment concludes with a recommended rest period, allowing the therapeutic effects to settle and work deeply within the body, leaving the patient feeling rejuvenated and restored.
